What is an Infectious Disease Specialist?

The role of an Infectious Disease Specialist is to review a patient's medical data including records, X-rays, and laboratory reports, to determine the cause for infection and manage an effective treatment plan.

An Infectious Disease Specialist may obtain specialized laboratory studies, such as blood or wound cultures, often found necessary for a precise diagnosis when dealing with difficult to diagnose or uncommon infectious diseases.  Additionally, these specialized studies may help to explain a patient's condition as they are affected by disease.

When do you need to see an Infectious Disease Specialist?

Not everyone who has an infectious disease needs an Infectious Disease Specialist. Your Primary Care Physician can take care of most infections, but an Infectious Disease Specialist is neededed to diagnose and manage specific, or difficult to diagnose, infectious diseases. Be sure to discuss options with your PCP if you're in need of treatment for an infection.

If you are hospitalized for an infection, or acquire an infection while hospitalized, an Infectious Disease Specialists will often be consulted to provide direction towards an accurate treatment plan. In some cases, they may continue to see you after you go home from the hospital.
